Can’t read the tiles?
Traditional sets rely on Chinese characters that leave non-readers guessing. MAALUCK swaps complex calligraphy for clean, intuitive symbols—so anyone can read the table instantly.
Minimalist Form. Instant Distinction.
Stripped of visual clutter, engineered for instant suit recognition.
The Sparrow Mark
De-coding Mahjong for global players meant tracing the tile back to its true cultural origins. Reinterpreting the ancient hieroglyph 雀 (Sparrow), we translated classical pictographs into a bold geometric mark that bridges global play with authentic heritage.
The Character Suit
Simplified from the traditional "Ten Thousand" series to core Chinese numerals (1–9) paired with clear Arabic digits. This dual reading system allows global players to intuitively learn Chinese numbers as they play.
The Wind Compass
A subtle four-dot anchoring system functions as a universal visual compass for the cardinal directions. It gives non-Chinese readers instant spatial clarity across the board without requiring character memorization.
The Bamboo Suit
To give the Bamboo suit its distinct visual identity, we engineered signature "stroke-end" terminals with subtle node details. This creates clear linear contrast against other tiles, ensuring fluid recognition during fast-paced play.

Decoded from the Tile Up
MAALUCK began during a pandemic game night with friends from different cultures. The desire to play was instant, but traditional sets created an immediate visual barrier. Intricate calligraphy meant non-Chinese players were constantly pausing to verify tile values, stalling the flow of the table. We saw firsthand how an iconic social ritual was being gatekept by visual clutter—and set out to re-architect the experience.
Co-creators Jacky Yick and Brian Lee approached the tile set through the lens of universal design and modernist minimalism. By "de-coding" complex characters into clean, intuitive iconography, every tile becomes instantly self-explanatory while respecting its cultural roots. We rigorously tested every iteration across live tables with first-timers and seasoned pros, dialing in the visual logic until gameplay became completely fluid. MAALUCK is the result: a high-design centerpiece that opens the table to modern gatherings everywhere.
Behind the Tiles

“A universal language of play.”
“Traditional sets were built for a specific time and language. MAALUCK was built to open the circle—reimagining centuries of heritage into a clear, intuitive ritual for everyone.”
Jacky Yick
“Design as a bridge between generations.”
The challenge was to maintain the soul of Mahjong while updating its visual vocabulary. By focusing on tactile quality and high-contrast accessibility, we ensured that the tactical depth of the game remains the hero, while the physical pieces speak a global language of clean geometry and premium craftsmanship.
